June Cleaning Tips to Beat the Heat and Allergies!

Summer is just about here! With it comes warmer days, open windows, and unfortunately… allergens, humidity, and household odors. June is the perfect time to freshen up your home and get ahead of summer’s biggest cleaning challenges! Whether you’re prepping for guests, enjoying staycations, or just trying to breathe a little easier, here are our top June cleaning tips to help you stay cool, comfortable, and allergen-free all season long.

1. Dust Like a Pro (Especially Up High!)

Pollen and dust love to settle in high places where you can’t see. Be sure to clean:

  • Ceiling fans-handwipe ceiling fan blades. To loosen up sticky debris, spray a little Pledge on the blade, let sit a couple of minutes, then wipe clean.

  • Light fixtures and vents – These often get overlooked but circulate dust every time the AC kicks on. Again, you can spray a little Pledge on your vacuum brush attachment before vacuuming the light fixtures and vents to “loosen” the debris when vacuuming.

  • Window blinds and sills-Opening windows brings in fresh air but also pollen. Try to open your windows when the pollen is low! Clean your window sills after the pollen season. Once again-Pledge is pretty awesome for this!

Pro tip: Always dust top to bottom when cleaning and finish with vacuuming to catch anything that may fall.

2. Breathe Easier with Clean Air Filters

If your home has central air, June is the time to check or replace your HVAC filters. Dirty

filters circulate allergens and reduce your system’s efficiency. If you suffer from

allergies, think about upgrading to HEPA filters and changing them monthly during high-

use seasons. You can also purchase extra filters to put just behind your intake vents.

3. Deep Clean Soft Surfaces

Upholstery, curtains, throw pillows, and rugs trap allergens and pet dander. Try to

launder them once a week or once a month to keep them clean. Also…

  • Vacuum sofas and under cushions.

  • Wash or shake out curtains.

Beat out and air rugs in the sun as well (UV rays help kill bacteria and mites).

4. Combat Summer Smells

Heat and humidity can really amplify odors. Focus on:

  • Trash cans – Wash them out with disinfectant them each time you put a new trash liner in.

  • Refrigerators – Clear expired items, wipe shelves, and put a fresh box of Baking Soda in. I love to do this before going on vacation so I come home to a clean fridge!

  • Drains – A little baking soda and vinegar can work wonders. Also, lemon wedges and ice are great for diswasher disposals.

Add natural freshness with lemon, lavender, or eucalyptus essential oils in diffusers or cleaning sprays.

5. Keep Bugs at Bay with a Clean Kitchen

Crumbs and sticky spots attract ants and fruit flies. It is always good to:

  • Wipe down cabinet fronts and drawer handles frequently

  • Empty the toaster crumb tray weekly.

  • Clean behind and under appliances weekly

A clean kitchen is your best defense against unwanted summer visitors!

6. Create a Cool, Calm Entryway

Your entryway is your home’s first line of defense. Keep it tidy to reduce tracked-in dirt,

pollen, and bugs. Use:

  • Door mats inside and out. (I actually use commercial ones because they work so well!)

  • Shoe racks or baskets to keep outdoor grime contained.

  • A quick wipe-down routine for door handles and entryway surfaces that need it. My dogs tend to “nose up” the lower parts of the entryway doors and I am always wiping them down.

7. Bonus Tip: Declutter and Lighten Up

Less clutter means fewer surfaces for dust to land on — and a breezier, lighter feel

overall. June is a great time to:

  • Donate unused items. Habitat for Humanity is really awesome!

  • Store heavy winter décor and clothes. Those space bags REALLY come in handy.

  • Switch out dark fabrics for light, breathable materials. I love light clothes and decor in the summer time.
